Time Flies!

Time flies when you're having fun!!

I can't believe it is mid-October! Things have been so busy.  This month is reading month...we've been reading, reading, reading.  Our theme has been Community Helpers.  We had a dress up day last friday.  Yesterday, we focused on firemen and fire safety.  This coming Thursday, we are going to visit some community helpers in our neighborhood to conclude our study! What fun!

The week before, we were studying G.  Check out our BIG GLITTERED G!! We had lots of fun making it.  I think I still have glitter clinging to me from that. :)

Please pray for safety for the teachers as we had a family recently robbed!

Thanks for your prayers and support!

10 Signs

So, everything is going well.  The students and I are making progress, learning and having fun.  Please pray for the faculty as there is a lot of sickness right now.

I was thinking the other day about what makes pre-k teachers different.  Generally, preschool and kindergarten teachers are the same in many broader ways.  However, I came up with this list specifically for me as a Pre-K4 teacher.  Those of you who are mothers/teachers of this age, you probably understand.  For the rest of you, this list may at least make you laugh as you think of me...and how this applies to me. :)

10 Signs You’re a Pre-K4 Teacher

10.  You spend your weekend making crafts
9.  You can throw a fit
8.  Dinner conversation includes poop, pee and vomit
7.  You have different colors on your hands and are usually covered in glitter.
6.  You’re good at playing hide and seek in a classroom
5.  Overseeing bathroom breaks is normal
4.  You’re really good at yelling “aim child!”
3. You spend your own money on a snack or lunch for “no child shall go hungry”
2.  You recognize the moments of “This is it.  This is why I’m a teacher” and enjoy them.
1.  You love it when a student wraps their arms around you, even if it is due to them missing their mom.

It's a new season; it's a new day!

Hi everyone! I apologize for being so late with this first post.  I have been back in Ghana for a month (of 5th year) and needless to say it has been busy!!! I have moved to a new apartment and have a new roommate.

I am teaching Pre-K4 again this year...for real! I have 9 students and four 3 year-olds that come nap with us in the afternoon.  My class consists of 8 boys and 1 girl! An unusual combination...full of action.  I'm excited about this year.  The theme for the faculty is "Renewal".  Wonderful changes have and are continuing to happen.  God is faithful.

I have become quite the "crafter" this year....quite new to me.  So, I thought I would be extremely nerdy and post some pictures.

Prayer Requests:

1.  Five people have malaria right now. Please pray that no one else will get it.

2.  Today (Thursday 29th) the Supreme Court decides who will be president/if there will be another vote taken.  Please pray for peace for Ghana in this time of decision.

Thank you for all your prayers!

Blessings to you all,

Meghann

Finishing the Race!

Dear Friends and Family,

Well, the school year is about to end.  My class will "graduate" this Friday.  Yay!! The rest of my time will be spent subbing, packing and packing.  As difficult as this semester has been, I believe God has taught me some important things about Him, me and life in general.  You say you believe God; when we go through times that test that belief, then we are proven.  I believe I am stronger from being here this semester.  I am planning on returning to Ghana for the 2013-2014 school year.

Prayer Requests:

-finish the year well
-get everything packed
-leadership of the school
-safety in travel for faculty/students
- smooth transition for those teachers leaving

Thanks for your prayers and support,

Meghann

Coasting

Well my friends, I am on the downhill drag to the end of the year!! I can't believe it.  We just completed our first week back after spring break.  A fantastic week I must say.  Spring break was wonderful...I did absolutely NOTHING!!

I have really seen a change in my students now.  I can tell they are getting ready to go to kindergarten.  On Wednesday, the phrase "pepper with questions" took on a whole new meaning for me.  My students were questioning everything: "Miss Harris, when do pilots sleep?"  "Miss Harris, why do onions make you cry?" "Miss Harris, why don't you sleep when we do?" On discussing the answer to that question, I told them so that if a bad guy came in I could keep them safe.  "Miss Harris, how would you beat him (the bad guy)?" Oh the wondering minds of 4-5 year olds!! I LOVE it!  We are really working well together...teaching them is a lot easier than 1-2 months ago.

I appreciate all your prayers.  They are how we survive over here.
Here are a few requests:
-several people have typhoid; please pray no one else gets it
-our school: that we will be able to hire the teachers needed and students keep enrolling
-as we head toward the finish line of completing the school year, pray that we will keep doing our best and stay focused
-our Seniors/advisors will be traveling to England next week for the Senior Trip
-please pray for the teachers returning stateside that they will be able to transition well and find jobs.

Thank you for all your prayers and support.

We are gellin'!

Dear Friends and Family,

We have now hit month 2, and the students and I are finally gelling together! Hooray!! After a lot of band-aids (plasters as they say) on boo-boos, hugs for those missing moms and a lot of fun learning, they have FINALLY accepted me.  I would say things are going very well.  Our third quarter is about to end. WOW! Only one more quarter after that.  Time flies when you're having fun.  I am enjoying this class a lot.  Teaching 4 year olds is fun and energy zapping (not of theirs mind you but mine) :)

Please continue to pray for us and our school.  Here are some specifics:

  • our school- good health of students and teachers; unity among the faculty; wisdom for our director
  • upcoming Bible lesson on the death and resurrection of Christ.  I have two Muslim students.  Pray that a seed will be planted.
  • continued peace between me and Jeanette (the previous teacher)
  • peace and safety in general for our school
Thank you for all your prayers.

Teaching and Learning

Dear Friends and Family,
Well, one month down.  Everything is going well…there is peace.  I faced more resistance to my coming than I thought I would; however, God has been teaching me a lot through it.  The main thing I have been learning is to take it one day at a time.  God gives me each day.  I must do my utmost best that day so that if I met him at the end of it, he would say “ well done, my good and faithful servant”.  Therefore, I do my best NOT to look at the semester as a whole but each day as all I have.  The school has been through a lot of turmoil; however, in the midst of it, the staff has been strong and given a good witness.  One teacher who came in new this year said “ I have never seen faith being lived out the way the staff does here”.  So even though hard times have come, God is faithful and hasn’t given us what we can’t handle.
The children in my class are absolutely precious.  I have 14 total though typically have about 11-12 each day.  We are still learning each other. They have been used to NO discipline and now a drill sergeant has come.  There are 2 Muslim children in the class, so please pray that they will see a difference in me.  For the past two weeks, Jean, the other teacher, and I have been working together very well.  We are more like a team, and I believe the children are benefitting.
One of the best things has been the Bible study that the women do together. We are doing a Beth Moore study called “Believing God”.  It is for such a time as this.  WOW!! It has been an encouragement to all of us.
Please pray for me that I will continue to truly BELIEVE God and take one day at a time.
Thank you for your prayers and support,
Meghann Harris
